Beta Reading
Having a tough time getting your friends and family to follow through with reading and giving you feedback on your fiction writing? Or is the feedback you get all rainbows and sunshine (“It’s the best story I’ve ever read!”) and very brief?
My job as your beta reader is to read your story thoughtfully and critically and give you my honest feedback from a reader’s point of view.
My beta reading rate is $0.002 per word. (That’s $20 for 10,000 words.)
I like to see 10–30 pages of your manuscript and ask you to fill out a short questionnaire about your writing before sending you a project proposal (quote). Your pages and answers help me know whether I’m the right reader for you.
I beta read only what I would read recreationally: any commercial or upmarket contemporary fiction featuring women protagonists. My favorite genres/subgenres are women’s fiction, low fantasy, magical realism, thriller, suspense, romance, “chick lit,” and family saga.
What does beta reading do for your manuscript?
- Gives you an idea of how much your average reader will enjoy your story
- Points out any confusing parts
- Gives you an idea of what your readers will be feeling or thinking at various points in the story line
- Shows you where you may want to revise dialogue, description, and characterization
- Gives you answers to any specific questions you might have about your story
"I loved seeing where you laughed out loud, where you admired my language and phrasing, and where you felt confused. This is exactly the beta read I was looking for."
